Behavioural Addiction Recovery
Understanding Behavioural Addiction
Currently, Gambling disorder is the only behavioural addiction officially classified as an addictive disorder for clinical diagnosis, however behavioural addictions cut across most people’s lives. Internet gaming is recognised as a disorder which requires further study, and sex, shopping and exercise are recognised as being potentially addictive. There is a lot of evidence to suggest that smart phone usage and social media are also addictive and cause psychological distress or mental health issues.
Behavioural addiction occurs when the urge to engage in them outweighs the risk of harm to yourself or those around you. Behavioural addiction is problematic when you have cravings to perform the behaviour, lose control over your ability to stop, spend too much time engaging in the behaviour, or neglect important responsibilities. If you have reached this point, you’ll need support to detox and reset, and on-going support to help manage your risk of relapse.
Our goal is to provide the best chance of recovery with a full detox and trauma-informed, evidence-based, one-on-one therapy. We also review your diet, and tailor fitness, and energetic and therapies informed by neuroscience for the most comprehensive, personalised treatment plan available, followed by ongoing support.
No Two Individuals are the Same
Nobody sets out to become addicted. The brain and body respond to the effects of spikes in dopamine levels in the brain, and work hard to counterbalance these effects and return you to a “normal” state. This means that increasing levels of behaviour are required for you to feel the same effects. There are numerous underlying causes of addiction, and at Tranquilo, we work hard to address what lies beneath. Using the latest neuroscientific findings, we also work with you to improve neural integration, and provide therapies to foster neurogenesis (forming new neurons).
That’s why each treatment plan is personalised and tailored to meet your unique needs. Our approach focuses on understanding the specific challenges you face and creating a recovery strategy that helps you restore balance and achieve long-term well-being.

Our individualised treatment approach integrates a range of evidence-based therapeutic modalities. Motivational Interviewing and Relapse Prevention planning are foundational to treatment. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy helps address traumatic life experiences, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) helps you recognise and alter negative thought patterns and behaviours, while Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) focus on improving emotional regulation and developing effective coping strategies. We also use psychodynamic psychotherapy and memory reconsolidation (MR) to effectively reveal and reframe difficult underlying issues. Our multidisciplinary team, which includes psychotherapists, psychologists, and AOD counsellors work together to provide integrated support and address any co-occurring mental health conditions.
